  • A Showstopping Prairie Village Kitchen Remodel

Last updated on March 22, 2024

A paneled ceiling, bay window, and original hardwoods help to create plenty of charm in this 1950’s Prairie Village kitchen. And while the homeowner loved so many of the charming details in her kitchen there were a few she was ready to part with. The painted original cabinets were cumbersome to use and the fridge interrupted the flow of the kitchen into the dining and living spaces. She was ready for a refresh.

Creating a New Kitchen

Megan Bringman worked with the homeowner to create her dream kitchen. A few simple design changes made a huge impact. Removing the walls surrounding the fridge and relocating the fridge to the old pantry opened up the kitchen to the breakfast area and living room. New cabinets and countertops replaced the old fridge. This instantly made the kitchen feel larger and provided more prep counter space.

The homeowner selected stunning new cherry cabinets which help to capture that warm, inviting, enjoy a cup of coffee feel while the Silestone Ariel quartz counters and AKDO Stagger Calacutta backsplash keep the room light. She also opted for a custom panel fridge that flawlessly disguises the fridge. The tab pull hardware provides style and function without distracting from the natural beauty of the cabinets.

Living Room Updates

Megan and the homeowner also carried a few of the design details from the kitchen into the living room. Knotty pine beams and paneling were added to the ceiling. The track lights and the ceiling fan were removed to make room for new LED can lights. The new lights tie in seamlessly to the beautiful panel ceiling and provide consistent lighting throughout the rooms.

The homeowner hoped for a better way to showcase her extraordinary Native American art collection. Megan helped designed custom lighting to highlight the collection as well as the beautiful picture above the fireplace. In addition to custom lighting, the fireplace underwent a transformation. The new mantle and Montclair marble created a bright new fireplace with a mix of modern lines and classic marble.

Showstopping Kitchen

A fresh coat of white paint throughout the kitchen and living room provides a crisp, bright finish. The homeowner’s flawless design taste and amazing collection of antique rugs elevates this Prairie Village kitchen from simply charming to a showstopper. It is truly what dreams are made of with its blend of modern and classic design elements as well as the layers of textures and colors.
