  • Traditional Meets Modern, An Award-Winning Home Renovation – Week 5

Last updated on January 14, 2021

This is week five and the final week of our Traditional Meets Modern Home Renovation Series. Just in case you missed it, here’s Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4. In our final week, we are excited to reveal the fabulous new primarysuite!

New Floor Plan

The homeowners found they had an unused bedroom on their main floor and that their existing primarybedroom wasn’t quite right. Gayle Jagoda created a new floor plan for the primarysuite which better suited the homeowners’ lifestyle. They had expressed from the start of the project their desire to have a library/sitting room and a laundry room within their primarybedroom. Gayle was able to accomplish this in the floorplan by combining the existing primarybedroom and an adjacent bedroom to create the new primarysuite. The wall between the rooms was opened up to create an opening between the two spaces and the previous hallway to the two bedrooms became the entryway into the suite. The second bedroom became the primarybeautiful sitting room with built-in bookshelves.

The new primarysuite floorplan also converted the full hallway bathroom into a powder bathroom. The team used the space from the tub as well as the closet of the second bedroom to create a laundry room in the primarysuite.

Sitting Room

Andy and his team totally transformed the second bedroom into a stunning sitting room. The floor to ceiling library shelves elevates the space from a standard sitting room to a cozy, chic library. The rolling ladder provides access to the upper shelves. The beautiful natural wood of the ladder creates warmth and contrast against the dark painted shelves. The gold sconces and chandelier are the perfect finishes.

The bedroom itself didn’t drastically change but it’s always amazing to see how a fresh coat of paint can change a space. The walls, trim and ceiling were all painted. The room also had new carpet and a ceiling fan installed.  The new primarybedroom is much fresher and more inviting. A place to truly retreat and relax.  The contrast between the deep blue walls and the crisp white trim, furnishings, and accessories is stunning.  Notice the splash of red!

primaryBathroom

Initially, the plan was to only update the vanity and remove the columns in the primarybathroom. The homeowners had decided to keep the tile, tub, and shower so they could invest in other areas of the home but as they often do, plans changed. Little by little the scope began to grow and, in the end, the bathroom was completely renovated. The bathroom did, however, keep its existing footprint. It was well worth it; the updated bathroom is beautiful and completes the primarysuite.

Carrera marble countertops perfectly complement the alder vanity cabinetry which was stained a deep, warm brown with a black glaze.  The glass tile vanity backsplash provides a modern element in the bathroom and brings in just the right splash of color.

Bathroom After

The old tub, surrounding tile and columns were removed and a new, elegant free-standing tub was installed. It is surrounded by white painted wainscoting. The floor’s white porcelain tiles were custom cut and angled to perfectly surround the grey striated tiles. The completed look turned out gorgeous and looks like a custom marble installation. It’s hard to believe this is the same bathroom!
