Debby Allmon and Amy Boeshaar stopped by KCLive on September 27 to talk about repurposing your home for changing lifestyles. There are many reasons you may need to repurpose your home for your lifestyle, your family may be expecting a new baby or maybe your parents have recently moved in.
What is Universal Design?
Universal design is preparing or planning your home’s spaces for all users regardless of size, age, ability or disability. Modifications can be made to make a space more convenient or accessible allowing everyone within the home can use them.
The bathroom is usually impacted the most in universal design. Installing grab bars or zero entry showers are design modifications that can help a spouse or child get in and out of the shower. Zero entry showers have no thresholds upon entry. Universal design can look beautiful and still be functional.
Making modifications to your home doesn’t have to break the bank. There are a lot of little things you can do. Installing levers instead of knobs on doors make them are easier to open. Also, single handle faucets are easier to turn off and on as opposed to dual handle faucets. Utilizing different heights in the design based on different needs can also be crucial for accessibility. There are lots of things you can do without spending a lot of money.
What do people get when they come to Schloegel?
A Schloegel designer meets with clients and they have a conversation about what’s not working in their space. After their conversation, their designer will provide the homeowner with different concepts and ideas. Throughout the process, homeowners stay very involved. It’s a team. As Debby said, “We don’t live there at the end, they do.” It is very important the client is happy with their new space.

Debby also discussed Schloegel’s Big Splash event, “Big Splash is an opportunity for us to give back. We decided seven years that we should something that we do best for somebody that needs it. So, we take applications for a child who needs an accessible bathroom and we give it away in Big Splash.”
