  • An Elegant Mission Hills Upstairs Renovation

Last updated on January 14, 2021

The homeowners bought their Mission Hills home knowing they had their work cut out for them. Most of the home was original and in need of updates. The young family has been working on renovations since they purchased the home and when it came time for work in their upstairs renovation they looked to Donna Kirsopp at Schloegel Design Remodel.

The Original Layout

Right off of the stairs was an entrance into a guest bedroom. The bedroom took up a large portion of the upstairs square footage and had become a storage area. Another issue with the existing floorplan was the primarybedroom and guest bedroom shared a bathroom. The bathroom was the original to the home and was awkwardly laid out as well as dated. The homeowners were hoping to be able to tap into the extra bedroom’s square footage to re-create their upstairs.

Creating a Loft

Donna brought in her expertise and a new vision for the upstairs. First on the agenda was cutting down the size of the spare bedroom to create a loft space. The loft opened up the upstairs making it seem much larger and let natural light into the hallway and stars.

The new loft provides an extra family hang out room or a nice quiet space to read a book. The room with its abundance of natural light is cozy and airy with a touch of elegance.

A New Guest Room & Bathroom

Next up in the upstairs renovation was addressing the shared bathroom. Sharing a primarybathroom with guests isn’t ideal and the homeowner’s wanted guests to have their own bathroom. Where there is a will, there is a way. Donna was able to use some of the bedroom’s square footage to carve out a small guest bathroom.

While the new guest room is smaller it is still the perfect reprieve for visiting guests. They now have their own bathroom and it is gorgeous. The Arrabescato Carrara honed marble hexagon floors and glass shower door creates a luxurious place for guests to get ready.

A Luxury primaryBathroom

The final and extremely important change was creating a true primarybathroom. Moving the bathroom entrance from the closet to the bedroom allowed Donna to redesign the existing bathroom and make it more functional. The new layout included a double vanity and stool room. She also utilized some of the space in the guest bedroom to create a larger shower.

Walking into the newly renovated primarybath is like walking into a luxury hotel. The vanity with two towers on the counter provides plenty of room. A center drawer has dual function as it also stores electrical plugs helping minimize counter clutter. The 3 cm Polarstone Calacatta Manhattan quartz counter is a little thicker than typical bathroom counters adding to the air of luxury.

The beautiful shower has a built-in seat and shampoo niche. The shower is tiled in 6 x 12 Arrabescato Carrara honed marble tile while the tile floor is an awesome Arrabescato Carrara honed marble herringbone.

The bathroom’s finishing touches with beautiful polished nickel faucets and pulls on the cabinets are timeless and elegant while the Mary Carol Abbey Steps wall color adds a touch of drama.

The homeowners are thrilled with their upstairs renovation! They finally have their own, elegant primarybathroom and a luxurious place for guests to stay. Not to mention a fabulous new hang out space.
