Habitat for Humanity ReStores are filled with treasures donated from people all over the city. The ReStore profits help fund Habitat for Humanity, an organization that supports families make their dream of homeownership a reality. ReStore opened its doors in 2000 and Schloegel immediately saw the many benefits of the store. Schloegel has helped donate materials from nearly every single project since the store opened.
The Mission of Habitat for Humanity ReStore

ReStore was created as a fund-raising branch of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. By salvaging materials from people who don’t need them anymore, we are saving space in our landfills, giving the public affordable materials, and allowing everyone to rebuild and restore our community.
Through programs such as Deconstruction Services, Habitat KC ReStore has given its neighbors an environmentally conscious alternative to demolition. This process of hand dismantling allows homeowners to donate salvaged materials to ReStore while making room for a whole or partial house remodel. Homeowners receive a tax benefit as a result of the donation and ReStore gains building materials to be put back into the community. Shoppers reap the benefits of deeply discounted prices and are able to make their dollars stretch farther. Habitat KC ReStore creates a winning environment for everyone involved.
Schloegel’s Participation
Schloegel was excited about ReStore and their mission out of the gate. Demolition and removing old materials is part of each remodel but so often there are materials in great shape that someone else would love to have in their home. True, it takes us a little extra time and care in the demolition process to preserve materials but it’s well worth it. Now that old vanity, sink or cabinets can have a second life in someone else’s home. The old saying of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure couldn’t be truer.
The materials are much more affordable than purchasing brand new and the profits go to a wonderful cause. In addition to those great benefits, everything donated to ReStore is kept out of a landfill. Habitat KC ReStore has diverted thousands of tons of material from the Kansas City waste stream since its inception.
ReStore continues to grow and is scheduled to open their largest facility in Martin City late this summer. Jake Schloegel joined the ReStore Committee in 2017 and is excited about their success and growth.
