  • An Artist within Schloegel’s Painting Division

Last updated on November 16, 2023

This summer we’ve had the honor of having Shannon Deatrick as an apprentice in our Interior and Exterior Paint Services Division. Shannon came to us with a ton of experience painting, just not the type you’re thinking of. She is a senior at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) where she’ll soon graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Painting.

Her Art

Shannon’s paintings draw viewers in with their unique composition and her ability to create light through the use of colors. Shannon draws her inspiration from observation whether that be from photographs or life. Her work invites the viewer to empathize with the presented narrative.

While Shannon obviously has natural talent, she believes her older sister’s dedication to music helped inspire her to pursue a career in the arts. Shannon started at KCAI thinking she’d work on an illustration focus but fairly quickly switched to painting to pursue her dream of having an independent studio. While owning an independent studio is her long-term goal she said she’s followed this path with clear and honest expectations. Shannon knows following a career in the arts can be a long, hard journey but her talent speaks for itself and several of her pieces are already available through Cerbera Gallery in Kansas City.

Painting at Schloegel

So how exactly does a rising art star from the Kansas City Art Institute end up working at a remodeling company? Funny enough, one of the faculty leads at the institute saw openings within Schloegel’s Paint Division and suggested Shannon take a look. And while no, painting walls, trim or doors isn’t even remotely the same as creating a one of a kind oil painting Shannon has found some valuable similarities. It’s important to take your time prepping and paying attention to details. Trying to take shortcuts like not priming a wall or preparing a canvas may have similar short-term results but will definitely show in the long run.

When asked how she likes working at Schloegel Shannon doesn’t hesitate to say it’s been hard work but a huge learning experience. She’s found homeowners are pleasantly surprised to see a lady on the Schloegel team especially in an industry so often dominated by males. They’re even more excited once they learn she’s an art student and are eager to ask for an opinion or suggestion from an artist’s eye.

Shannon hails from Des Moines, Iowa. Maybe it’s the Iowan in her or maybe it’s just Shannon but she has the amazing combination of natural talent, humbleness, and an unwavering work ethic.

“Shannon has been a great addition to the Schloegel team. She always has a positive attitude and it’s been a great summer with her onboard. We’re excited Shannon has decided to stay on with Schloegel part-time once classes resume.” – Perry Holloway, Schloegel Paint Manager
