I’m ready to lay hardwood flooring. It says to lay felt underneath. Is this the #15 tar paper felt used in roofing?

There are several reasons a felt-type paper is installed below a hardwood floor. The paper helps control sound, adds a softening to the floor and acts as a vapor or moisture barrier. You can pretty much get all of this out of 15-pound roofing felt. There are companies that manufacture under-layments specifically for hardwood. One such company is Fortiber. Take a look at their web site for more information about products for hardwood floor installations. Good luck with your installation.
