  • 2019 Paint Colors of the Year

Paint manufacturers follow paint trends pretty carefully, after all, it is their business. They put a ton of research into sales trends and use those to develop yearly forecasts for what they believe will be the color or colors of the year. While some of us aren’t exactly running to paint our entire home in their elected color of the year it is fun to take a look at where the trends are heading and see how they could be incorporated in our home’s design.

Cavern Clay

Sherwin Williams announced Cavern Clay SW 7701 as their color of the year. Per Sherwin Williams Cavern Clay is a warm terracotta color that is a nod to midcentury modern style but with a soul of the American Southwest, which creates a desert modern aesthetic.

It’s a beautiful color for accents or if you’re a color lover it will create a warm and inviting dining room color.

We love the way Edith Lavie used the color for letters in a playroom. It adds the perfect amount of warmth to the black and white base. A great complement to leather.

Metropolitan

While Sherwin Williams went warm, Benjamin Moore went cool. They selected a gray shade as their 2019 color of the year. It is Metropolitan AF-690. Ellen O’Neill of Benjamin Moore & Co. says, “Metropolitan AF-690 emanates nuance, harmony, and extravagant ease. Always adaptable, it softens to matte or shimmers with sheen. It’s neutral. It’s understated. It just is. This is color, off-duty.”

Metropolitan pairs beautifully with the 14 other colors in it’s coordinating palette. It’s a color we can see homeowners selecting throughout their home and accenting with navy or hunter green. We’ve been using grays on walls and cabinets for years and don’t see the trend going away any time soon.

Night Watch

Is it possible to fall in love with a color? Because if so, this could be the one. PPG’s color of the year is Night Watch – PPG1145-7 and it is a rich, luxurious and classic shade of green. The shade emulates the feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature. It can take center stage as in a room or act as a complement to a more neutral color.

“The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” explains Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

We are seeing more dark green in design. It’s not quite made it to the neutral popularity of navy but it is definitely up and coming. Pair dark green with gold or brass and it’s a match made in design heaven.

Blueprint

Behr’s color of the year is Blueprint S470-5, an honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life. Blueprint creates a space where you can build your own reimagined life—where awareness of what we want to build for ourselves can transform into action.

It is a beautiful blue that could be a bold cabinet color choice or the perfect color on a door.
