  • A New Kitchen for an Old Leawood Ranch Home

Last updated on July 1, 2021

Ranch homes reign supreme in Old Leawood, with most of them, built in the 1950s and 1960s. Today those same ranch homes are in hot demand for both young families and empty nesters. They’re built on sturdy foundations but the trick is re-designing them to encompass today’s lifestyle. That was the case for this home, it was time for an update.

Existing Kitchen

Our client reached out to us, with hopes to create a larger kitchen within the home’s existing footprint. The U-shaped kitchen was original to the home including the cabinets the dark cabinets. The overhead cabinets blocked the sightlines in the house and kept the kitchen relatively dark even though there should have been plenty of light with the slider door and over sink window.

Plans

Megan Bringman got to work putting together a design that would better utilize the kitchen space in the Old Leawood home. The goal was to create more workable counter space and additional cabinet storage while keeping the room bright. The new design took out the sliding door allowing the kitchen to slide over and take full advantage of the space.  It includes an island and a large pantry cabinet.

New Kitchen

We promise it’s the same house. Three windows above the sink let natural light flood the entire kitchen. Also, minimizing the number of upper cabinets makes the room feel larger. Megan and the client selected soft white painted inset cabinets, a beautiful, classic choice. The subway tile backsplash is another classic choice tying with the age of the home. The MSI Q Fossil Brown quartz counters offer a warm contrast to the soft white cabinets striking the perfect balance.

The island provides plenty of additional workspace, storage, and a place to grab a cup of coffee. The back wall of cabinets is also the home of the fridge, microwave, wall oven, and a pantry. Finally, an additional window offers backyard views while seated at the table in the kitchen.

The Old Leawood homeowner loves her new kitchen! It’s bright, spacious, and timeless, a space she’ll be able to enjoy every day!
