When the homeowners found this beautiful 1910 Craftsman house, they knew it was right for them but it would need a little TLC to make it into their home. Since they’d recently relocated to Kansas City, they looked for recommendations from their realtor for the right remodeling company. Their realtor recommended Schloegel Design Remodel and it was a great fit.
The couple met with Kelly Summers and expressed their desire to update the Craftsman home but keep the historical elements including the woodwork and rough timber ceiling beams. They wanted to tackle both the first and second floors, keep within the existing footprint while providing a better layout for their lifestyle.
Main Floor Revamp
The homeowners knew they needed a new kitchen layout. The existing kitchen was dark and awkwardly laid out. An open layout with storage, a large island, stainless steel appliances, and an apron sink were the must-haves for the new kitchen. They also wanted to give the rest of the floor a refresh. Kelly and the Schloegel Design team presented two plans and the homeowners selected one which opened up a dining room wall to the kitchen as well as a wall dividing the existing pantry from the kitchen.
primarySuite Retreat
While the goal for most of the house was to retain its Craftsman style the homeowners had a different style in mind for their primary. The existing primarywas on the third floor of the home and wasn’t the cozy, inviting retreat they wished for. They wanted to move the primarysuite to the second floor and hoped to capture an overall transitional design while keeping it comfortable. Kelly presented 3 different options for the primarysuite.
The plan combined the previous bathroom, sunroom, bedroom, hallway, and closet to create a large bedroom, sitting room, a walk-in closet with a washer and dryer and a primarybathroom.
A Pre-Construction Plan
Construction in a home built in the early 1900s has a high probability of some unknown surprises. The Schloegel team was able to help mitigate some of those risks by doing what the team coined “exploratory surgery”. This entailed exposing everything behind, between and under the floors, walls, and ceilings that would be impacted during the remodeling and adapting the plans and budget accordingly. This was extremely helpful in keeping the project on task and budget.
Incredible Main Level Update
It is unbelievable how much the kitchen changed within its original footprint! The white walls and ceiling combined with opening up a few wells make the space feel light, bright and fresh. The shaker style cabinets are a two-tone color palette. The upper cabinets are Sherwin Williams Repose Gray and the lower cabinets are Sherwin Williams Naval. The island counter is Monte Cristo granite while the perimeter is Fossil Gray Quartz in a concrete finish. The original beams inject warmth and character.
What do you do when your mudroom entry has no storage? Create it of course! Our Paint Services team knocked it out of the park on patching the stain throughout the home including here. I bet you can’t tell what’s new and what is old.
The dining room feels so much larger with the wall to the kitchen opened up. The fresh white walls really make the beautiful original woodwork pop.
The Schloegel team was able to salvage this beautiful heavy cast iron fireback during the demolition and Kelly worked it into the entryway. This wonderful piece of history was forged in Pittsburgh, PA and stamped in 1897. What better way to welcome guests into your home than with a great story!
Custom Marvin windows replaced the nonfunctioning windows flanking the fireplace. Cherry trim was added to increase the fireplace height and Picasso Travertine stone completed the new surround.
Transitional primarySuite
Understated with a touch of rustic and few modern elements tie this primarysuite into one beautiful package. The two-sided fireplace serves as a divider between the bedroom and a sitting room.
The homeowners did a 180 on the design style of their primarybathroom. They wanted a modern bathroom with modern amenities. It was important to keep the Craftsman integrity of the home throughout but here they wanted something different. The frameless floating vanities are finished in reconstituted walnut and mix perfectly with the Cambria Ironsbridge quartz counters. The high-end fixtures and heated tile floor make getting up in the morning just a little bit easier. The bathroom turned out beautiful and while the style may vary from the Craftsman home the warm hues and exposed beams make it a great compliment.
