  • An Addition Transforms a Brookside Home – REMY Gold Medal Winner for Room Addition

Last updated on July 1, 2021

The family of six living a busy life in this Brookside house were looking for more space. They loved their home and Brookside neighborhood and moving wasn’t on the agenda. They determined the solution was an addition to their home. The couple wanted to add more space to create several new areas to entertain both their friends and friends of their kids. This project took home the Gold and All Star for Room Addition over $250,000 as well as The Best of Show award for projects over $250,000 in the 2018 REMY Awards!

Ready for a Change

The homeowners did their research before choosing a remodeling company to take on the task of creating these big changes and fulfilling their remodeling dreams, Schloegel Design Remodel became the evident frontrunner to meet all of the couple’s needs.

The homeowners wanted to make their house the “go-to” house where their kids would be able to have friends over and the couple themselves would still have their own spaces to entertain their friends. The goal was to add spaces so that everyone could come together.

After working designers Megan Bringman and Leslie Hatfield the couple knew they wanted to add a two-story addition and outdoor living space. The addition included a hearth room, mudroom, exterior storage room, and a powder bath on the first floor. The second-floor portion of the addition included a game room, full bathroom and spare bedroom/multipurpose room.

The Plan

First Floor, Floor Plans

Before the remodel, the first level of the home including the foyer, living and family room areas, dining room, kitchen, mudroom, and storage area.

Before

After the addition to the east and south parts of the home, the new floor plan shows how the original structure fits with the addition. The entry level now consists of a hearth room and patio at the back of the house, a third garage, new side entry door and hallway with a staircase leading up to the second level. There’s also a powder room tucked away under the stairs. Also, a mudroom and storage room were added to the east side of the home.

Second Floor, Floor Plans

Prior to the remodel the upper level consisted of four bedrooms and a short hallway leading to the farthest rooms.

Before

After the Schloegel team was done with the remodel, a portion of one of the bedrooms was converted into a hallway that connects the new addition to the original upper level. The remodel includes a game room, a new bedroom, and full bathroom. The added bedroom is open to the game room but sliding doors can be closed to add privacy.

The Addition Revealed

Mudroom

The new mudroom serves many purposes. Each kid in the family has their own cubby space to store their school and sports bags. The washer and dryer are also in this area which is convenient for washing dirty sports clothes. There’s even a space for the dogs under the counter with a sliding door.  The desk and counter space work well for dropping mail or keeping things out of the view from the rest of the house.

Powder bath

This fun print wallpaper helps adds some impact to this compact powder bath that fits under the staircase.

Game room

The game room on the second floor serves as the ideal space for kids to host sleepovers and hang out with friends.

The game room is split into two areas with custom navy barn doors which help to close off the part that can act as a spare bedroom.

Inside the black cabinets is a queen size murphy bed. The homeowners can easily fold up the ping pong table and fold down the murphy bed for guests.

Second-floor full bath

This new upstairs bathroom is simple and beautiful. The vanity is a Shiloh maple painted a dark navy with a quartz counter. Marble tiles on the floor and shower floor add some depth and interest.

Hearth room

The hearth room serves as the perfect space for family time. The double-sided fireplace acts as the main focal point of this room and adds some beautiful detail.

Outdoor living space

In this outdoor living space, the other side of the fireplace from the heart room is visible and yet again acts as the focal point of the space. The gable porch roof features high ceilings and a fan, the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors even if it’s raining or extremely hot in the summer.

The uncovered portion of the patio houses a large dining table for ten with a large umbrella for shade. There is also a built-in firepit for cooler nights and of course s’mores!

At the end of the remodel, the homeowners couldn’t have been more happy with their new home. They now have plenty of space to entertain and be together without having to move from the house and neighborhood they love.
