This week we’re kicking off a new series of posts where we’ll take a look at another REMY Award-winning project. This fabulous home renovation took home a Silver in the Entire House Remodel Category. The homeowners had worked with Gayle Jagoda to renovate their previous home in 2014. When they purchased this home a few years later it needed updating and they once again turned to Gayle and the Schloegel crew to help. Our own in-house interior designer, Debby Schloegel, was also on the renovation team. She helped complete the design by assisting in the selection of paint colors, fabrics, and furniture.
The home was built in 1991 and had minimal updates since then. The home itself is in great shape and the homeowners were excited to give it a new look. Gayle had the challenge of melding together the homeowner’s different design style preferences. He prefers very modern while she leans towards a more traditional taste.
The Home Renovation Vision
The home had a great existing floor plan and it essentially remained the same with a few small changes. The first change was to remove a wall between the staircase and the foyer. This seemingly small change would make a big impact when entering the home. The second and largest change was the home’s primarybedroom. Gayle worked with the homeowners to create a primarysuite to accommodate their lifestyle. The new suite combined the existing primarybedroom and a second bedroom to create a library/sitting room and a laundry room. The new plan also converted a full bathroom in the hallway into a powder room. With the floorplan determined Gayle and Debby worked through the color and material selections with the homeowners.
Demolition
After the Design Phase was complete the construction was ready to kick off. On the first day, Andy Gower and his team prepared the site for demo and construction. This is a very important step that Schloegel takes with each of their projects. Dust protection is put up, access to the site is established, parking is determined, a material storage space is created and many other items are checked off. After the site is prepared the team starts demolition.
The carpet is removed, the hearth room cabinets are also removed and relocated to the basement. Andy said the range in the kitchen put up a fight when they removed it but the team persevered…and won. Once the range was out the team removed the kitchen island and hood. The kitchen had a unique exhaust setup. The vent line for the hood in the island ran through a soffit above the island and down the column next to the island, through the floor and out through an unfinished part of the basement. While the ingenuity is greatly appreciated, the column and soffit didn’t quite fit into the new design.
Floor plan changes usually have the most demo which held true in this project. The new primarysuite required the existing bathroom, walls between the second bedroom, and the attic above the primarybe demolished.
The team worked on the demolition around this whole house project for almost three weeks! Of course, lots of other work was also done alongside demo including early framing and roughing in electrical.
