Work has begun at the Haskin residence; our 2018 Big Splash recipient and we are getting excited to see the project completed! We introduced you to Garrett in December. Garrett is an amazing teenager who was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Unfortunately, this has caused him some mobility issues. Very few homes are designed for accessibility and this is true in the Haskin home. Learn a little more about Garrett.
A New Design
The main bathroom was not built for accessibility. The door wasn’t wide enough for Garrett’s wheelchair. And even if he could get into the bathroom the bathtub/shower didn’t work. It had been unusable since the family moved into the home.
Amy Boeshaar worked with Haskin family to design a bathroom that would fit their needs. In the new design, the toilet now sits where the former tub was and the shower will be where the sink used to be. The vanity will be located in the same place but will not be as long and the sink will be relocated. The design will provide Garrett the space he needs to access everything within the bathroom on his own. The door into the bathroom will also be widened.
Construction
Ben Bass and his team got to work the first part of the new year. The team has already demolished the old bathroom. The team has framed in the new design as well as a new window. It looks great already!
The team on the project also has a new member, Garrett himself! Garrett has helped Ben with some of the nailings while Ben has shared a few valuable math lessons. In fact, Nanette (Garrett’s mom) said they covered the exact Math the next day in Garrett’s school lessons.
