Finding the right remodeling contractor can be tricky. This person or company will have access to your home and the budget for your project. While it’s important to do research online and read reviews, it can be even more valuable to talk to your contractor’s references. Not sure what to ask? No problem.

Designer, Debby Allmon offers the questions you should be asking your contractor’s references. She says to request references of jobs the contractor has performed in neighborhoods similar to yours and similar types of projects. She says to not only to ask how the project went but to ask more specific questions.

Questions to ask your contractor’s references:

  • Were you presented with a schedule?
  • Did the contractor stay on schedule during the project?
  • How did the contractor handle budget or pricing?
  • Was it a fixed price or a cost-plus type of job?
  • Was the budget met?
  • Were there any major cost overruns at the end of the project and was it within the budget you had set for yourself?
  • Would you hire that contractor again?
  • Do you want that person back in your home working on another project for you? – Debby notes this one is very important
  • Did your contractor provide you with any means of communication besides just a phone call or a text? I.e. emails or access to software tool?
  • Was there a project manager or Lead Carpenter on site you could communicate with daily?

All of the answers to these questions are very important to know before moving forward with your contractor. They help you understand how they’ve performed for other people and if they will be the right fit for your project.
