  • Dark and Moody Whole House Remodel

Last updated on September 21, 2022

This whole house remodel is dark and moody in the best possible way! We loved working with our amazing clients and transforming their home but their story had a rough start. They had begun construction with another contractor that, unfortunately, provided them with shoddy, inconsistent work. The contractor had also asked for additional money for materials that should have already been purchased. With little recourse, materials lying in wait, and the house in shambles the client decided to stop the bleeding; fire their contractor, and begin anew. Having fallen victim to an unscrupulous contractor, finding someone they could trust was paramount! They reached out to Schloegel and worked with the fantastic Kelly Summers. She worked closely with them to ensure they felt comfortable with every step in the process and they were anxious to move forward. TJ Krantz, Chris Bradley, and Kirk Thomas of our Handyman Services Team ensured the job moved forward seamlessly and everything was done to the Schloegel standard!

Nearly every surface of the house was updated in some way including the dining room, kitchen, hallway, living room, a powder bathroom, primarybedroom, primarybathroom, stairs, upstairs bathroom, and bedroom.

Kitchen & Dining Area

While the changes in the kitchen and dining area weren’t too drastic, they made a big impact. The Schloegel Paint Services Team stripped the popcorn ceilings, repaired and repainted the kitchen cabinets, walls, ceiling, and trim. The Grizzle Gray paint by Sherwin Williams makes the wainscotting and white cabinets stand out. New light fixtures finished the spaces and they look fantastic!

Hallway & Living Room

The hallway and living room really show evidence of what our poor homeowners were living through. The floors at the top of the stairs were ripped up and the living room had become the catch-all.

Yes, we promise this is the same house. Guests are welcomed in on the classic Calcutta in matte finish tile floor which was laid in a herringbone pattern. We removed the carpet, newel posts, spindles, etc., and then installed and painted new newel posts, spindles, end caps. The risers, tread, and handrail were stained the color of the new hardwood floors. Godfrey Hirst Exquisite Reputation carpet in natural was the perfect neutral carpet for the steps. Finishing off this beautiful entry and stairs is an industrial light fixture.

It’s a tough before image as the room became the storage area for everything during their turbulent remodel.

Installing Struct-O-Lite and paint over the existing brick created a vintage appearance and a new thicker mantel gave the fireplace a refresh. Our paint team scraped the popcorn ceiling and then painted the ceiling and the walls. The same color from the kitchen was carried through the living room. The homeowners selected beautiful dark engineered wood floors, which we installed throughout the house. Terms such as dark, moody, and vintage come to mind when you see the completed room with the stunning Restoration Hardware furnishings.

Powder Bathroom

Dark purple walls, popcorn ceilings, and a standard mirror made this space a bit dated. Oh hey, Kelly!

Chris and his team demolished the entire bathroom including the soffit above the sink. Once demoed they installed the same Calcutta tile as the entryway, a new toilet, vanity, and a mirror. The gray walls perfectly pick up the gray in the countertop veining. Restoration Hardware light fixtures throw in a touch of an industrial vibe.

primarySuite

We don’t have a great before of the bedroom but it was your standard four walls with carpet.

Wow, the room turned out fantastic! Our paint team removed more popcorn from the ceiling (are you seeing a trend?) and painted the ceiling, walls, and trim. The same dark engineered hardwoods were carried through the primarybedroom. We love the masculine, dark and moody vibe with the leather headboard and sumptuous gray, velvet curtains.

The primarybathroom is fairly small and narrow and made to feel even smaller with the large soffit above the vanity. Our goal was to brighten up the room and make it feel spacious while still capturing an industrial, moody vibe.

Another striking room! The dark, large-format hexagon tiles on the floor set the stage with a vintage feel. The metal vanity and quartz countertop bring in the industrial vibe along with the awesome Restoration Hardware light fixtures. The tile backsplash is carried from the floor up and into the shower. The frameless glass shower door makes the bathroom feel larger by extending the eye through the shower. Lighter paint color also makes the room brighter. Finally, the wall mount accessories including a train rack, glass shelves, towel hook, and mirror are what really take this bathroom to the next level.

Upstairs Bathroom

The upstairs bathroom had become the storage area for construction items. The bathroom was a good size but was ready for a refresh.

Kelly and our homeowners wanted to make this bathroom feel a bit more girly and brighter. The homeowners selected two single vanities to act as one dual vanity. Keeping with the lighter feel they selected chrome fixtures, light gray walls, and white pinwheel mosaic tiles for the floor. Again, wall accessories and lighting make this space feel a little extra.

Inwards beveled tile laid in s stacked pattern gives the classic subway tile a new spin. The niche along the entire wall is not only functional but an awesome symmetrical feature.

Upstairs Bedroom

As you can see this is the state the upstairs bedroom was in when Kelly first arrived. Their previous contractor hadn’t even completed laying the floors and installing the trim. Our team was able to finish the room and it turned out fantastic.

We love how beautiful this home turned out. It’s dark, moody, and has a personality all its own! Perhaps more important than that is how happy our homeowners were when we finished the project. We are so glad we were able to help them put their home back together.

“Most amazing teams and their collaboration all together made us feel like we now have more family. We were left by our first contractor, ran, and took our trust away from anyone. Schloegel not only saved our home but our marriage and our new outlook on life. Kelly and her team will always be in our hearts and we are forever grateful!!!!” – C & J
