Forget the dusty china cabinet at your grandmother’s house. With help from Schloegel Design Remodel Designer Megan Bringman, displaying all the serving ware, books and knick knacks you’ve collected over the years has never looked better.

Custom Wall Art

BatzAfter 002 (2)Whether it’s an oversized antique vase or a saxophone you played throughout college, we all have that one item that doesn’t make sense anywhere. But it just looks so cool. So why not consider hanging it on the wall? That’s exactly what Megan did with a client who had a beautiful Italian pottery collection that had to be on display.

“The vibrant colors are so pretty on the creamy walls and add the perfect touch!,” she said.

This article has some great tips on how to hang just about anything.

Book Shelves that Wow image005

People with large book collections, whether they’ve tackled them all or not, usually like to show them off. That can be a great asset for a room’s design, Megan said.

“You can never have too many books, especially when they’re colorful!”

Make your bookshelves the focal point of any room by putting them in easily accessible places. That way, they’re as functional as they are impressive.

Put Cabinetry to Use

Iimage002f you’re starting from scratch, customizing cabinetry is a great way to make sure your favorite heirloom antique gets the space it deserves. A lighted cabinet with a glass door, for example, is perfect for displaying china and other serving dishes. Megan said this china hutch was a functional and elegant solution for one client with a dish collection that had to be seen.

“This dish collection is so pretty on display and makes it so convenient when you need to set the table,” she said.

More pointers:

  • Keep it simple
  • Bold colors, prints and patterns are fun and add a pop in neutral spaces
  • If you don’t already have a collection, start one! Estate sale finds like vases, pottery and old books can always bring great personality to old spaces
