  • Kansas City Contemporary Home Renovation – Wk 4

Last updated on December 10, 2022

This is week 4 of the Kansas City Contemporary Home Renovation and Design Series. Just in case you missed it, here’s Week 1, Week 2  and Week 3.

Most of the drywall is hung and it’s time to start the hardwoods, trim, painting and fireplace work. The project has quite a bit of hardwood to lay including the kitchen, prep kitchen, family room, powder room, living room and dining room. Needless to say, Billy and his team have their work cut out for them.

Hardwoods

The team started laying the white oak hardwoods in the kitchen first. From there they did the prep kitchen, powder bath and hallway. The team also started the dining room floors. The dining room had a unique design as the hardwoods would be laid in a herringbone pattern and the perimeter would be laid with marble tile. The herringbone design took a little extra time in layout to achieve the correct size of the herringbone and ensure that the perimeter tile would be the same dimension all the way around. Once they were all laid came the fun of sanding and staining.

All the hardwoods originally received the same first coat of stain. After looking at the floors with the stain Donna determined the dining room herringbone hardwoods should be a gray color so they were sanded and re-stained to get just the right color.

Once all the floors were stained, two finished coats were applied, prior to the final coat that would be applied at the end of the project. After the hardwoods dried they were all covered to protect them from the remainder of the project work.

Trim and Fireplace

While finishing up the hardwood floors the trim for the project was delivered. The new trim scope of work included new taller baseboard trim, crown molding and all new contemporary styled doors and casing throughout. While Billy’s team worked on installing the new trim and doors the Schloegel Paint Division started the paint prep and painting for the project. Both Perry and Billy noticed the trim was not sanded properly by the manufacturer, so the team took the extra step to sand all the trim before and after it was painted.

The kitchen design had the fireplace getting a facelift and Billy installed the new mantle so it would be ready for the porcelain tile.

While the team is wrapping up the trim the new cabinets are delivered and they will start installing them next week. In our next post on this home renovation, we’re finally going to discuss the 200 gallon salt water fish tank in the bar and what is required to support it.
