This two-story home in Overland Park, built in 2004, is similar to one many of us have seen. The home layout is ideal for today’s lifestyle but the style…not so much. Yet, ripping out and replacing beautiful cabinets seemed like such a waste, which is where the power of paint comes in.
When the homeowner’s met with Kelly Summers they expressed their desire to have a more modern look in their home. There were a few items throughout they knew they needed to replace but overall the recurring theme for their home’s update was new paint.
A Little Dark & A Little Dated
In the kitchen the cabinets and countertops were dark.
The hearth room fireplace and tv alcove could also use a little TLC. The fireplace itself was small and the tile surround was lackluster. The tv alcove wasn’t made for any standard size tv’s so there would always be extra space above the tv.
A desk in next to the home’s back entry was rarely used and more of a drop spot for mail, kids’ shoes, coats & backpacks. What the family really needed was storage cabinets.
The powder bathroom’s vanity was a little dated and the plastic accessories could use an update.
The fireplace in the living room was a little too ornate while the tile was a little dated.
The Power of Paint
It is incredible how much different the home looks. Kelly’s tremendous eye for design shows through again! The Schloegel Painting Services team also did an incredible job. The perimeter cabinets were all painted in Sherwin Williams Pure White. The counters on the perimeter are quartz in Caesarstone Concrete. The white cabinets instantly make the kitchen feel larger and more open, even though the layout didn’t change! The island was painted Sherwin Williams Grays Harbor and the quartz counter is Cambria Brittanicca.
The tv alcove in the hearth room was removed and a new fireplace insert was installed. Travertine tile now surrounds the fireplace and the tv is installed above a small wood mantle. The bookshelf and wood around the fireplace were painted white to tie in with the woodwork and kitchen cabinets.
The unused desk is gone and, in its place, are new built-in storage cabinets and drawers for easy storage.
The powder bathroom looks completely different with the painted vanity, new counter, updated light fixture, and new accessories.
Removing the corbels, changing the surround and painting the fireplace trim Sherwin Williams Grays Harbor added tons of character into this room.
