How do I adjust window trim for thicker plaster?

I am trying to apply a 2nd layer over the original plaster wall in order to sound proof a room. I was going to use 5/8" Quiet Rock. My concern is how to remove the window trim. Also, if I put a 2nd layer of Quiet Rock over the original plaster will I have to do anything different with the trim to make sure it still fits around the window?  Will the added layer create too much distance between window & trim?

Thanks, Ken

Ken,

Ken,
You are correct in thinking that you will have to make an adjustment to accommodate the new wall thickness.

Can I Use a Vent-Free Fireplace in a Bedroom?

Jake,

I have an antebellum home and am renovating a bedroom that once had a fireplace which was torn out long ago. I'd like to install a vent-free gas log set in this room, but I do not want to put it in a cheap pre-fab vent-free firebox, but hope I can build a real- looking firebox from real firebrick inside a chase that looks like a real interior chimney.

Refrigerator remodel

Jake,

I am getting a new refrigerator that is larger than the space the current one is in. I would like to relocate the frig to a different area, but there is a wall vent (for heat and air conditioning) there. Can this be moved so that the air comes out under the cupboard next to the refrigerator? If so, is this difficult?

Linda,

This is not a job for the un-trained homeowner.

How do I know if a stone fireplace was built structurally sound?

Hi, Jake.

I bought a house with a second story pre-fab fireplace surrounded by a stone hearth and faced with stone averaging 1 3/4" thick on the sides and front all the way to the ceiling which is vaulted. The fireplace is off center in the room so total height is about 8' on the left edge and 10' on the right.

How do I Modify a Staircase and Add a Landing?

I just looked at a townhouse I would like to buy but…. the stairs are horrible to the second floor straight up and need to be redone. I think it’s worth the investment but have no idea where to start, who to call, or what that calls. Right now its just wood slats that I think are an accident waiting to happen. I want a real staircase with a resting somewhere in mid-flight as I have an older mother who needs to rest somewhere in between. Can that even be done?

Can I use Tyvack under the Styrofoam or leave the selvage?

Jake-

I am preparing to reside in an older house. Built around the mid 20's it has oak planking as original sheathing. Then 15lb felt and something similar to selvage in a pattern to look like brick siding. Can I leave the selvage and go with either fan Styrofoam type 3/16 insulation before the vinyl or can I use Tyvack under the Styrofoam?

Thank you, William

William,

I don’t know why you couldn’t use a insulation board then cover it with Tyvek.

Turning a three-season porch into a four-season porch

Jake-

Turning a three season porch into more of a four season porch with out spending a lot of money. Being able to insulate to keep heat from escaping quickly.

Thanks, Mary

Hi Mary,

I’m assuming you want some information on how to best insulate your room to maximize its comfort and extend its seasonal use.

How do I install new cabinets with old soffits that don’t fit correctly?

Hi Jake,

I have no idea about reno and stuff but we bought and moved in a 18 year old house two months ago. At first I thought we were just going to take out carpet and put in laminate. Anyway one thing leads to another... I went to an auction and bought a 36" kitchen cabinets only to find out the top cabinets are too tall.
