Getting a feel for hardwood flooring

Jake,

I'm ready to lay hardwood flooring. It says to lay felt underneath. Is this the #15 tar paper felt used in roofing?

– Terry

Terry,

There are several reasons a felt type paper is installed below hardwood floor.  The paper helps control sound, adds a softening to the floor and acts as a vapor or moisture barrier.

Baseboard burden

Jake,

I have a living room that has two walls that are painted over plaster, and two walls that are wood paneling. I want to take up the carpet and put down laminate. Then I will need to add baseboard around the edge. Do I paint the baseboard to match the painted walls or stain it to match the paneling?

– Leta

Leta,

I think the base should all be the same color.

Rearranging a kitchen

Jake,
When remodeling a home built late 50's, the range was located adjacent to the wall in the right corner. To avoid having to move the electrical, and there really is not any where else to relocate the electric range, are there any guidelines as to the amount of space there needs to be between the range and the wall to the right? I can put a backsplash and a side splash if needed.

How to insulate between rafters and keep them exposed?

Jake-

We have an old house, pre-1800's. We live in MA. We have a room above our kitchen that is equivalent to an attic I guess you could say. The room currently has no heat, has two windows, and is adjacent to a finished room that is heated. No insulation between the lower kitchen or adjacent room.

How do I remove a faux fireplace in my basement?

Dear Jake-

I have a faux fireplace in my basement made of large rocks held together with concrete. I believe behind the fireplace are 2 cracks in the foundation because when it rains water is pouring into my basement out of the rocks of the faux fireplace.

How do I install new cabinets with old soffits that don’t fit correctly?

Hi Jake,

I have no idea about reno and stuff but we bought and moved in a 18 year old house two months ago. At first I thought we were just going to take out carpet and put in laminate. Anyway one thing leads to another... I went to an auction and bought a 36" kitchen cabinets only to find out the top cabinets are too tall.
