This week, The Wall Street Journal confirmed what we've been feeling as designers and remodelers for some time: people are investing in home remodeling more than they have since the real-estate bubble burst nearly a decade ago.

I'm redoing a kitchen. Should the cabinets be installed before the flooring, or should the flooring be installed under all the kitchen area?

When we remodel a kitchen, about the only time we install flooring before the cabinets is when we are using unfinished hardwood flooring.
The Leawood Rotary club recently raised over $3500 in their annual Christmas Auction. The money was evenly divided between Marillac School, www.marillac.org and the Urban Rangers, www.urckc.org, two very deserving organizations. Recently, a group of KC NARI members held a “virtual shower” for The Children’s Place in Kansas City. Schloegel Design Remodel team members Debby Allmon, Megan Lynch and Donna Kirsopp were part of the planning and execution of this event and are pictured below with other NARI members who delivered the gifts on Friday, November 19th.
We recently completed a remodel, part of which included updating the main staircase of our clients’ home.
This update included new oak treads and risers, new carpet runner, wrought iron spindles and paint. The change in this home is so dramatic that it seems difficult to believe that it is actually the same house we originally walked into.
I just looked at a townhouse I would like to buy but…. the stairs are horrible to the second floor straight up and need to be redone. I think it’s worth the investment but have no idea where to start, who to call, or what that calls. Right now its just wood slats that I think are an accident waiting to happen. I want a real staircase with a resting somewhere in mid-flight as I have an older mother who needs to rest somewhere in between. Can that even be done?
We are really excited to be starting a project in historical Hyde Park. This wonderful duplex was built in 1921, and still posses many of the beautiful, unique qualities found in buildings built during that era. The generous moldings, doors and trim are original.
We began working on the historical Hyde Park renovation a few weeks ago. Since the building was erected in 1921, we followed safe lead practices as required by the EPA which included the isolation of the entire building, removal and proper disposal of all debris.
I had my doubts about finger jointed exterior trim when it became common some 20 years ago. I thought at the time that it would be troublesome. I called my millwork provider and expressed my concern. I could see the wood separating over time at the machined joints and moisture seeping in and causing the joint to fail.
